The Janitor/Custodian at The Salvation Army is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and upkeep of the facility, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, washing, dusting, polishing, and cleaning restrooms and windows.   • Responsible for exterior maintenance of Corps properties including removal of leaves and trash, as well as removal of snow and ice from sidewalks, walkways, steps and driveway.
  • Assist with program activities: set up tables, chairs and other equipment for ongoing activities and special events.
  • Receive food deliveries and donations and store in assigned areas.
  • Take trash and recyclables out as per NYC Dept of Sanitation schedule.
  • Inform the Corps Officer of damaged or unsafe conditions in the building.
  • Attend staff meetings and workshops as needed.
  • Receive and store donations and prepare for The Salvation Army truck pick up weekly.
  • Willingness to pick up donations in Corps van.
  • Assist Corps Officer with seasonal maintenance and activities (ie: kettle sign upkeep, driving volunteers/staff to assigned areas, Angel Tree program).
  • Carry out other duties as assigned by Corps Officer

Qualifications

Required

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Valid NYS driver's license.
  • Ability to operate manual/power tools in a safe manner.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally.
  • Ability to work outdoors under adverse weather conditions.
  • Physically able to do rigorous manual labor, including lifting up to 50lbs.

Preferred

  • Handyman/Tradesman skills.
  • Spanish speaking ability.

Overview

+ Schedule is primarily Monday through Friday, 10:30 am-6:30 pm when after school program and Summer Camp are in session. 9am-5pm when programs are not in session.
