  • Reinforce education and discharge instructions

Position Highlights: NT6 Observation

  • Number of beds on unit: 35
  • Patient population (age, diagnosis, specifics about unit): The Observation Unit is a 35-bed unit that provides acute care for issues ranging from cardiac, to general surgery, to behavioral health. These patients receive holistic care that reflect the values and mission of Carle Foundation Hospital. Patients’ goal length of stay is 24-48 hours.
  • Nurse to Patient ratio: 1:5-6
  • Department culture and resources: The Observation unit is a fast-pace, team-oriented unit. We work closely with our physician partners and ancillary team members to achieve the best outcomes for our patients. We have a robust Partnership Committee that meets monthly. We have a unit-based educator, 2 nurse supervisors, charge nurses and a discharge nurse.
  • Frequent nursing skills/equipment used: Foley/IV/NG insertions, Nursing prioritization, IV pumps, Lift equipment, SCDs, Telemetry monitoring, Patient connection





LPN will be paired with a RN or UNL to assist with the patient load. LPN tasks may include oral meds, IV piggyback meds, trach care, dressing changes, wound care, hourly rounding, reinforcing patient education and completion of discharges. LPNs will document assessments and care plans after the RN has completed the initial assessment and initiated the care plan.
