Responsibilities

  • Utilizes a systematic approach to nursing by incorporating assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Provides and facilitates competent health care of patients and families in area of practice.
  • Ensures adherence to established standards of care and scope of practice.
  • Acts as preceptor and supports the development of other staff and healthcare students.
  • Responsible for obtaining instrument trays and equipment for procedures.
  • Positions patient for procedure in accordance with patient safety guidelines.
  • Scrubs arms and hands and assists the surgical team to scrub and put on gloves, masks, and surgical clothing.
  • Scrubs in for surgical cases with physician.
  • Established knowledge of creating and maintaining a sterile field, scrubbing and assisting within the surgical procedure.
  • Count sponges, needles, and instruments before and after operation.
  • Prepare patients for surgery, including positioning patients on the operating table and covering them with sterile surgical drapes.
  • Hand instruments and supplies to surgeons and surgeons' assistants, hold retractors and cut sutures.
  • Prepare, care for, and dispose of tissue specimens taken for laboratory analysis.
  • Monitor and continually assess operating room conditions, including patient and surgical team needs.
  • Operate, assemble, adjust, or monitor sterilizers, lights, suction machines, or diagnostic equipment.
  • Prepare dressings or bandages and apply or assist with their application following surgery.
  • Identifies, selects and coordinates equipment, instruments and supplies required for scheduled procedure with circulating nurse.

Qualifications

Required

  • Established knowledge of creating and maintaining a sterile field, scrubbing and assisting within the surgical procedure.
  • Knowledge of using specialized beds and positioning equipment, as well as sterilizers and specialized video equipment, navigation, and lasers used with the department.
  • Ability to count sponges, needles, and instruments before and after operation.
  • Ability to prepare patients for surgery, including positioning patients on the operating table and covering them with sterile surgical drapes.
  • Ability to hand instruments and supplies to surgeons and surgeons' assistants, hold retractors and cut sutures.
  • Ability to prepare, care for, and dispose of tissue specimens taken for laboratory analysis.
  • Ability to monitor and continually assess operating room conditions, including patient and surgical team needs.
  • Ability to operate, assemble, adjust, or monitor sterilizers, lights, suction machines, or diagnostic equipment.
