The Senior System Engineer at The Phoenix Group is responsible for designing, planning, configuring, documenting, deploying, and taking ownership of messaging infrastructure technologies. This role involves working closely with the Infrastructure Team to establish standards for messaging technology, leading Exchange migrations, coordinating changes to the production messaging environment, and managing projects. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in messaging technology, particularly Exchange, and possess excellent communication and project management skills.

Responsibilities

  • Design, plan, configure, document, deploy, and take ownership of messaging infrastructure technologies.
  • Work with the Infrastructure Team to establish and document firm standards for messaging technology, ensuring adherence and monitoring the messaging environment.
  • Lead Exchange on-premise to Exchange Online migrations, including hybrid scenarios, connectivity, and interoperability.
  • Coordinate and manage changes to the production messaging environment, including vendor management for updates and relationships.
  • Assist in resolving escalated incidents and participate in problem management activities.
  • Stay informed about industry trends to recommend improvements in technology used by the firm.
  • Assist in negotiations and recommendations for software and hardware purchasing agreements.
  • Participate in or manage cross-functional team projects for implementing new or updated technology.
  • Cross-train other IT staff in the use and maintenance of messaging technology.
  • Effectively manage medium to large projects, including writing project charters.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, quality service, and a proactive attitude in interactions with internal members, departments, external clients, and vendors.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
  • 8+ years of relevant experience in technology and business skills detailed above.
  • Knowledge of ITIL Service Management principles.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including interpersonal skills necessary for effective coordination.
  • Ability to recommend sound infrastructure designs aligned with business objectives.
  • Capable of making significant decisions and recommendations on complex issues to achieve long-term strategic objectives.
  • Attention to detail and sensitivity to confidential information.
  • Develop and document standard operating procedures for IT use, ensuring consistency in task execution.
  • Coordinate teamwork activities and organize effective meetings.
  • Understand and analyze industry technology trends relevant to the organization's environment.

Preferred

  • Expert knowledge in multiple technology areas including: Administration of global corporate email systems based on Microsoft Exchange, including high availability and disaster recovery.
  • Implementation and support of Exchange 2016 Database Availability Groups with cross-site replication.
  • Scripting with PowerShell and Exchange Management Shell for reporting and task automation.
  • Advanced administration of Microsoft Active Directory, including Group Policy, Federation, Certificate Services, and file replication technologies.
  • M365 user, group, and device management technologies, including Intune and device management.
  • EDiscovery capabilities including the M365 Compliance Portal.
  • Azure/M365 Identity and Access Management (ID, RBAC).
  • Email security tools and methods such as TLS, DKIM, DMARC, SPF, and anti-virus, with experience in Mimecast Messaging Gateway, Microsoft Exchange Online Protection, Proofpoint, or related technologies.
  • Deployment and configuration of messaging monitoring tools like Logic Monitor.
  • Proficiency in mobile device management (MDM) platforms, specifically operations with Exchange ActiveSync.
  • Experience with cloud email archiving solutions like Mimecast.
  • Additional knowledge in server storage design, SAN, NAS, iSCSI, storage virtualization, network communication protocols (TCP/IP, HTTP, SSL/TLS, etc.), M365 Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, Bookings, Azure AD Connect, and backup technologies.
