  • Able to work indoors or outdoors year-round in all weather conditions.
  • Able to work in areas with radiation.
  • Able to take and pass a respirator fit test.
  • Able to work assigned shift as production needs.
  • Able to take and pass a Physical Agility Test.
  • Five (5) or more years experience as a machinist, machinist mate, mechanic/automotive repairman, engine man, heavy equipment repairman or similar experience.

Preferred

  • Prior Mechanical experience such as Automotive Repair, Plant Maintenance, Machinery Installation/Repair.
  • Successful completion of a technical/vocational program in Machining, Diesel Technology, Automotive, HVAC, Mechanical.

**The Role**

Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries, offers competitive pay, weekly paychecks, paid time off, paid holidays, medical benefits including an on-site health center, 401K company match, employee discounts, and more.

Outside machinists are assigned responsibility for installing, grooming and testing the ship's major mechanical components and systems. Work occurs on commercial or naval ships in various stages of new construction, overhaul or repair. Examples of ship's components work on are steam turbines, reduction gears, propellers, reactor components, catapults, weapons systems, periscopes and can be as diverse as laundry, food service or refrigeration equipment. Outside machinist operate a wide variety of tools and machinery. The tools range from wrenches and screwdrivers to complex and sophisticated equipment such as saws, drill presses, optical equipment, mills, portable machines, boring equipment, precision grinders, instruments and lathes.

**Must Have**

Candidates must be 18 years of age or older and legally eligible to work in the U.S.

Candidates must be able to:

**Nice to Have**

Prior Mechanical experience such as Automotive Repair, Plant Maintenance, Machinery Installation/Repair is a plus. Successful completion of a technical/vocational program in Machining, Diesel Technology, Automotive, HVAC, Mechanical.
