The Registered Nurse OR at Christus Health provides circulating nurse services in the operating room during surgical or pain management procedures and assists the surgical team as needed in any other capacity, according to established procedures. Responsibilities

  • Ensures that proper techniques and practices are used according to accepted standards of practice
  • Supervises and assists scrub technician as necessary
  • Ensures care of patient through proper identification, checking of chart, and reporting of changes in condition
  • Performs scrub duties as necessary Assists in control and maintenance of supplies and equipment
  • Assists the anesthesiologist/CRNA as necessary
  • Documents all nursing care delivered in the operating/pain room in the medical record
  • Performs other nursing duties as assigned
  • Maintains established Center/departmental policies and procedures
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient and Center related business
  • Develops and maintains an effective working relationship with patients, families, visitors and other Center employees
  • Documents concisely, precisely and accurately on all records or documents as indicated by policy

  • Ability to adequately assess, diagnose, plan and implement nursing interventions and evaluate patient condition

Qualifications

Required

  • Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing
  • Licensed to practice in the state of Texas
  • Current BLS, ACLS required

Preferred

  • CNOR certification
  • Operating room experience (minimum 1 year)

PreOp/PACU Cross-trained

Summary:

Responsible for admitting the patient to the clinical area and providing nursing care to the preoperative patient, as well as, developing a nursing care plan specifically designed for the individual patient. The staffing of the Center is based on a teamwork concept. Employees may be cross-trained in other clinical areas and may be expected to perform duties other than their normal ones as staffing and patient needs change. We are also looking for one to deliver nursing care in the Post-Operative Care Unit (PACU) to patients entering the postoperative phase of treatment, responsible for assessing the patient’s condition and readiness for discharge. The staffing of the Center is based on a teamwork concept. Employees may be cross-trained in other clinical areas and may be expected to perform duties other than their normal ones as staffing and patient needs change.

Responsibilities:

Pre-Op 1. Ensures the preoperative area has a clean and therapeutic environment for all patients at all times 2. Ensures supplies and equipment needed are available and in good working order 3. Admits the patient to the unit and prepares him/her for the scheduled procedure 4. Makes initial assessment and determines the nursing needs of the patient 5. Explains nursing procedures and actions taken to help reduce anxiety 6. Identifies patient’s physical and mental status 7. Monitors the patient’s medical condition and reports any significant changes to the admitting physician or anesthesiologist 8. Assures surgical consent and preoperative test results are in the medical record prior to proposed procedure 9. Reports any important health history facts to the operating room nurse 10. Gives patients and family members emotional support as necessary 11. Documents patient care delivered, accurately in the medical record 12. Performs other nursing duties as assigned 13. Maintains established Center/departmental policies and procedures 14. Maintains confidentiality of patient and Center related business 15. Develops and maintains an effective working relationship with patients, families, visitors and other Center employees 16. Documents concisely, precisely and accurately on all records or documents as indicated by policy. 17. Participates in Quality Assessment activities as directed for the continuous improvement of patient care and Center business

PACU 1. Ensures that the PACU has a clean and therapeutic environment for all patients at all times 2. Ensures supplies and equipment needed are available and in good working order 3. Admits the patient to the unit and monitors recovery from anesthesia and surgical procedure 4. Makes initial assessment and determined the nursing needs of the patient 5. Follows and implements physician’s orders and performs all required nursing activities 6. Explains nursing procedures and actions taken to help reduce anxiety 7. Identifies patient’s physical and mental status 8. Monitors the patient’s medical condition and reports any significant changes to the admitting physician or anesthesiologist 9. Documents accurately in the patient’s medical record the care received and the progress in the recovery process 10. Assures that the patient fits the documented criteria prior to discharge 11. Gives patients and family members emotional support as necessary 12. Performs other nursing duties as assigned 13. Maintains established Center/departmental policies and procedures 14. Maintains confidentiality of patient and Center related business 15. Develops and maintains an effective working relationship with patients, families, visitors and other Center employees 16. Documents concisely, precisely and accurately on all records or documents as indicated by policy. 17. Participates in Quality Assessment activities as directed for the continuous improvement of patient care and Center business

Requirements:

  • High school diploma
  • Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing or vocational school
  • Licensed to practice in the state
  • Previous preoperative care experience preferred
  • Previous PACU experience preferred
  • ACLS
  • PALS
  • BLS
