The Social Studies Teacher at Avenues The World School is responsible for guiding students to become informed, skilled, and empathetic agents of change through a unique World Course focused on history and the social sciences.   • Collaboratively plan discipline-based and interdisciplinary units and projects using backwards design frameworks, such as Understanding by Design.
  • Co-construct with students a classroom environment that establishes high standards, fosters a sense of belonging, and upholds our founding values of welcome, safety, and respect.
  • Practice cultural competence in the classroom and workplace.
  • Inspire trust and confidence among guardians and families through regular, proactive communication.
  • Contribute to the broader community of our NYC campus and global network.

Qualifications

Required

  • Several years of teaching experience and an exemplary track record of student learning.
  • Strong content knowledge in one or more of the following: world history, American history, social studies, and economics.
  • Proficiency in backwards planning and lesson design frameworks, such as Understanding by Design.
  • Experience with, or interest in, interdisciplinary, project-based teaching.
  • Intellectual curiosity and the humility to reflect on, and continually grow in, your teaching practice.
  • Commitment to creating a culture of equity and inclusion.
  • A strong sense of personal responsibility for the success of every student.

What World Course Is

The World Course at Avenues draws on the disciplines of history and the social sciences to help students understand the challenges and opportunities of the world around them--and the context for those challenges. It is uniquely focused on preparing future leaders to tackle global-scale problems. A core academic program at Avenues, the World Course asks students to understand the world through a variety of lenses. Students examine the cultures, behaviors, successes, and conflicts among and between people, and explore the root causes and results of human interactions with other humans, with ideas, and with the environment.

More Information

This role is for a temporary full time leave replacement estimated to take place between January 6 to March 14. This role is compensated on a salary basis prorated for the duration of the assignment.


If hired for this position, the annual compensation range is $72,000- $110,000 depending on skills and experience. Leave positions for a duration of less than 3 months are not benefits eligible.
