  • Makes road tests to locate defects in equipment operation and as a check on repair work before the return of equipment to active use.
  • Assist in the inspections, and replacement of parts of complex gasoline and diesel engines.
  • Assists in the repair work requiring the use of electric arc, acetylene, mig, tig and stick welding equipment.
  • Completes daily equipment repair logs.
  • Performs related work as required.

Qualifications

Required

  • Graduation from high school.
  • 1 to 3 years of experience as an automotive mechanic at the full trade level, or any equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Knowledge and ability to recognize, diagnose, locate, and repair defects in automotive and diesel equipment.
  • Knowledge of standard practices and equipment of the automotive mechanic trade.
  • Knowledge of the principles of operation of gasoline and diesel engines and of mechanical repair methods applicable to heavy trucks and construction equipment.
  • Familiarity and understanding of electrical vehicle maintenance.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to diagnose defects in mechanical and electrical components of automotive equipment.
  • Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems.
  • Skill in locating and adjusting defects in automotive equipment.
  • Skill in the use and care of tools employed in automotive repair and adjustment work.
  • Ability to use a computer including all diagnostic software and online ordering tools.
  • Possession of and ability to maintain a valid State of Connecticut driver’s license.
  • Employee must obtain a CDL with Air Brake Endorsement within 12 months of employment.

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

This is skilled mechanical work of the journeyman level in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel drives, heavy equipment, and construction equipment. Employees of this class are responsible for the performance of skilled tasks in repair work on trucks and passenger vehicles, and heavy equipment, such as payloaders, excavators, tractors, rollers, low-bed trailers, graders, refuse vehicles and street sweepers.

Assignments are given in the form of oral instructions or general written work orders from a supervisor. Work is subject to review through tests and the operating condition of equipment after work is completed.

1st shift: 7:00am - 3:30pm

2nd shift: 3:00pm - 11:00pm

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Does general overhaul and repair work on light and heavy trucks, gasoline and diesel motors and other automotive and mechanical equipment; repairs and replaces shock absorbers, brakes and transmissions; adjusts clutches; checks and balances wheels for proper wheel alignment; repairs and installs hydraulic controls.
  • Tunes motors using standard testing equipment.
  • Does diversified electrical work on automotive equipment such as installing batteries and terminals, repairing and adjusting lights and repairing generators and starters.
  • Makes road tests to locate defects in equipment operation and as a check on repair work before the return of equipment to active use; utilizes a variety of common testing devices such as ammeters, volt meters, gauges of various types and other equipment.
  • Assist in the inspections, and replacement of parts of complex gasoline and diesel engines, including valves, pistons, main bearings, transmissions, and power takeoff systems.
  • Assists in the repair work requiring the use of electric arc, acetylene, mig, tig and stick welding equipment including straightening chassis and bumpers, bodies; hardfaces shovel teeth, grader blades and other equipment.
  • Completes daily equipment repair logs.
  • Performs related work as required.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Graduation from high school; and 1 to 3 years of experience as an automotive mechanic at the full trade level, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills:

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Possession of and ability to maintain a valid State of Connecticut driver’s license.
  • Employee must obtain a CDL with Air Brake Endorsement within 12 months of employment.
  • Upon successful completion of 1 year of service and possession of a CDL a Mechanic B shall advance to Mechanic A.
