As a participant in the Co-op/Intern Professional Development Program, you will be cultivating professional skills and performing professional level work. You won't just be sitting in meetings and shadowing all summer; you'll be actively contributing and doing the same work as other FirstEnergy employees on your team. You'll receive on-the-job training and challenging assignments. You will also be assigned a Supervisor, a Coach/Mentor and a dedicated IT Intern Program Coordinator to help you maximize your learning and growth throughout your summer... and beyond. Internships with FirstEnergy are full-time, paid opportunities spanning 14 weeks. You must be actively enrolled in an accredited university or college.

**About the IT Fiber Optic Network Specialist Internship**

The FirstEnergy Fiber Networks team is responsible for managing the design, construction, and maintenance of FirstEnergy's 10,000+ miles of private fiber network which provides mission critical support to the FirstEnergy transmission companies and local electric distribution companies in the operation of the FirstEnergy electrical network.

The Fiber Optic Network Specialist Intern position is a remote opportunity with occasional opportunities to travel to office locations for meetings and possible travel to job sites, substations, or other company locations. This position will work with management, engineering and field personnel within IT and other FirstEnergy departments and will work closely with a wide range of fiber contractors and sub-contractors on a daily basis for the installation of new FirstEnergy fibers, planned and unplanned maintenance events, and more.

**Examples of possible job duties and responsibilities of an** **IT Fiber Optic Network Specialist:**

+ Support and manage the FirstEnergy Fiber Optic Network and projects.

+ Follow established IT Operations and network processes.

+ Championing safe work practices for FirstEnergy employees and contractors in accordance with Corporate, OSHA and other industry practices.

+ Work closely with other FirstEnergy departments, contractors, and subcontractors to develop project requirements, costs and schedule.

+ Develop business cases for new projects.

+ Field site visits in support of projects, maintenance, or relocations (as necessary).

+ Design fiber solutions that are scalable, reliable, and cost effective.

+ Ensure FirstEnergy and contractor documentation is complete and up to date.

+ Coordinate fiber optic events within the FirstEnergy Change Management process.

**Applicant Requirements:**

+ Currently enrolled, full time, in a bachelor's degree program at an accredited university/college focusing on **Information Technology, Engineering, Telecommunications or other related disciplines**

+ Class Standing - **Rising Junior**

+ Maintain a minimum cumulative **GPA of 2.5**

+ Must have the ability to work without sponsorship (now or in the future)

**Preferred Skills/Experience**

+ Basic telecommunications concepts.

+ Project management concepts and tools.

+ Network design, engineering, and drawing management tools.

+ Knowledge of GIS mapping programs

+ Must be organized and work well with priority changes

+ Willingness to undertake assignments involving unfamiliar subjects

+ Demonstrates strong communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively participate on a team and in remote meetings and conference calls
