The Equipment Technician - CDL at the City of Houston is responsible for safely and efficiently operating light, medium, or heavy equipment and power tools to perform a series of skilled/manual activities and tasks, and/or to transport materials, personnel, and supplies to complete work assignments. Responsibilities

  • Inspects vehicles for required supplies, materials, and equipment.
  • Observes and follows all safety procedures and precautions in the operation of equipment/tools at worksite.
  • May investigate and respond to complaints from the public.
  • Prepares and maintains reports, forms, and records of assignments, service calls and/or maintenance and repairs of equipment and tools utilizing a data tracking system.
  • May act as a lead of a crew and coordinate and monitor work assignments and personnel.

Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma, GED, or the ability to read, write, add, subtract, and follow oral and/or basic written instructions.
  • Six months of experience performing manual and field work with power tools or equipment.
  • Valid Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving.
  • May require a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) based on the type of equipment the position is assigned to operate.

Preferred

  • Preference given to eligible veteran applicants.
  • Experience in operating 5/10 Ton Roller, Asphalt Distributor Truck, Bucket Truck, Bulldozer, Concrete Mixer, Dump Truck, Flatbed, Flusher (W/Tanker Endorsement), Front End Loader, Herbicide Spray Truck, Lowboy, Pothole Patcher, Slope Mower, Sweeper, Gradall, Excavator Backhoe, Boom Truck, Jet Eye, 50 Ton Crane, Menzi-Muck (Spider Excavator).
  • Experience in Ditch Maintenance, Street Maintenance, Storm Sewer Maintenance, Concrete Maintenance, Bridge Maintenance, Asphalt Maintenance, Vegetation (Mowing) Maintenance.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Safely and efficiently operates light, medium, or heavy equipment and power tools to perform a series of skilled/manual activities and tasks and/or to transport materials, personnel, and supplies to complete work assignments. The Equipment Technician may be cross trained to work in one or more areas as required. Operates light, medium, or heavy equipment; operates trucks to transport personnel, equipment, refuse and/or materials to and from work sites. Operates power tools, uses hand tools and performs a variety of skilled/manual tasks and activities, i.e., spraying, landscape, moving furniture, roofing, painting, infrastructure repairs, mowing, pouring concrete or asphalt, fabricating, and installing traffic signs, installing pavement markings, repairing traffic signal infrastructure, etc. May assist with the cleaning and repair of all Groundwater plants. Maintains, cleans and services equipment, vehicles, tools, and facilities. Inspects vehicles for required supplies, materials, and equipment. Observes and follows all safety procedures and precautions in the operation of equipment/tools at worksite. May investigate and respond to complaints from the public. Prepares and maintains reports, forms, and records of assignments, service calls and/or maintenance and repairs of equipment and tools utilizing a data tracking system. May act as a lead of a crew and coordinate and monitor work assignments and personnel. May perform other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position routinely requires lifting moderately heavy items (up to 40 pounds) and/or very long periods of walking on rough surfaces on a routine basis. There are routine discomforts from exposure to moderate heat, cold, moisture/wetness and unpleasant air conditions.

This is a Department of Houston Public Works Management Position at the Tier I Level

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

KNOWLEDGE:

Requires a high school diploma, GED, or the ability to read, write, add, subtract, and follow oral and/or basic written instructions at a level necessary for successful job performance supplemented by specialized courses or training in the operation of the construction equipment.

EXPERIENCE:

Six months of experience performing manual and field work with power tools or equipment are required.

LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

Requires a valid Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving.

May be required to have a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) based on the type of equipment the position is assigned to operate

**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**
