This classification involves performing semi-skilled work to complete a variety of maintenance repair tasks in one or more trade areas, including facilities, site, and building maintenance. Responsibilities

  • Performs general carpentry including selective demolition of existing furniture and equipment, woodwork, site restoration, and caulking/painting.
  • Performs paintings assignments, re-frames windows, installs and services doors and door hardware, replaces broken boards, replaces acoustical ceiling tiles, and installs flooring.
  • Performs general electrical work throughout City facilities and City-owned street lights; conducts routine maintenance on exhaust hoods and fans and performs other electrical work wiring and installation/replacement of electrical fixtures as necessary.
  • Uses various hand and power tools to build partitions, chair rails, baseboards and shelving. Installs paneling, sheet rock, and acoustical ceilings.
  • Performs general custodial and laboring tasks including housekeeping, grounds-keeping, vehicle operation and routine vehicle maintenance to ensure operability.
  • Loads and unloads heavy boxes, bulky supplies, furniture and materials using the proper tools and equipment.
  • Mixes plaster, mortar, and cement; assists journey level craftsperson engaged in building or repairing brick, stone, or tile walls, flooring, and structures.
  • Assists in the repair and overhaul of air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment utilizing some skills of the electrical and plumbing trades.
  • Assists the pump station operator and in maintenance and operation of pump stations.
  • Installs and repairs street signs and asphalt channelization, using hand tools such as posthole digger, iron bar, and air hammer, removes graffiti from public places around the City
  • Clear sinks, toilets, lavatories, sewer lines, and similar systems and facilities.
  • Erects scaffolding; loads and unloads materials; cleans tools and work area upon completion of project.
  • This position may respond to critical calls after-hours and on weekends as needed.
  • Performs related work as required and as assigned.

Qualifications

Required

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of GED diploma
  • Reasonable work experience in performing a variety of semi-skilled maintenance and repair tasks including carpentry, light electrical, plumbing, and mechanical work.

NATURE OF WORK

This classification involves performing semi-skilled work to complete a variety of maintenance repair tasks in one or more trade areas as outlined below.

Incumbents in this position perform a variety of general maintenance work, which approaches the journey level but does not require a high a degree of skill. Employees are frequently called upon to perform maintenance and repair work in the field of facilities, site, and building maintenance including but not limited to selective demolition and restoration, moving/relocating furniture, site work, painting, pressure cleaning, some landscaping, grounds maintenance, carpentry, basic electrical, mechanical, and plumbing. Assignments are usually received verbally or by work orders distributed through electronic methods using a CMMS system and may be accompanied by sketches and other documentation. Instructions are usually specific as to the nature of the work to be completed. At the discretion of the supervisor, a maintenance mechanic may devise his/her own method for accomplishing assigned tasks and may work with some independence, but all work is subject to observation and inspection by the supervisor.

Requirements

EDUCATION

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of GED diploma
