  • Determines product failures and ascertains reasons for failures through various testing procedures
  • Performs various administrative activities including entering data, writing reports, printing reports and filing
  • Talks to coworkers and management about testing results and suggests ways to resolve quality problems
  • Promptly informs supervisory personnel of any issues relating to product quality
  • Analyzes data and records test and inspection information in both written reports and computer system data entry

Qualifications

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, work orders, operating instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to complete written reports
  • Ability to operate computer system to enter data and print reports
  • Ability to communicate orally with co-workers and supervisors
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure
  • Ability to measure using a variety of tools and techniques
  • Ability to interpret graphs and interpret gauges
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others and lead teams
  • Ability to maintain a high level of self-management and motivation
  • Reliable attendance and proactive communication of time off requests

We are looking for a Lab Technician to join Kaiser Aluminum Operations in Bellwood Virginia!


What you will work on:

  • Demonstrates understanding of and compliance with all safety, environmental, emergency and company policies and procedures
  • Performs all job requirements with a commitment to clear and honest engagement within a culture of accountability, responsibility and ethical behavior.
  • Reads/interprets oven releases and test sheets to determine product and testing requirements, including type and number of tests to be performed.
  • Determines which samples to test using Barcol or Webster Impressor to ascertain hardness.
  • Prepares samples for testing using various methods and machinery including, but not limited to, lathe, mill, ban and other saws, micrometer and elongation.
  • Performs various tests to determine product tensile strength, yield and elongation and verifies that product is within proper limits.
  • Determines product failures and ascertains reasons for failures through various testing procedures including, but not limited to, spark or burn testing, conductivity testing, cookie testing.
  • Performs various administrative activities including entering data, writing reports, printing reports and filing.
  • Talks to coworkers and management about testing results and suggests ways to resolve quality problems.
  • Promptly informs supervisory personnel of any issues relating to product quality.
  • Analyzes data and records test and inspection information in both written reports and computer system data entry.


What you will bring to the role:

  • High school diploma or GED required. Experience with testing equipment, ban saws, milling machines and lathes preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, work orders, operating instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to complete written reports. Ability to operate computer system to enter data and print reports. Ability to communicate orally with co-workers and supervisors in face-to-face, one-on-one and small-group settings to communicate work instructions and/or quality issues and concerns.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to measure using a variety of tools and techniques. Ability to interpret graphs and interpret gauges.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others, confer with co-workers and management. Ability to lead teams to complete tasks. Ability to maintain a high level of self-management and motivation. Reliable attendance and proactive communication of time off requests.
  • Ability to collect and compile information and use the information to select appropriate courses of action according to routine methods, procedures or practices. Some creative problem-solving needed. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to learn job-related material primarily through written and oral instruction and observation.
  • The employee may frequently be required to work more than 8 hours in a shift and occasionally be required to work in excess of 12 hours in a shift.
  • Employees may be regularly exposed to heat in excess of 80 degrees and cold less than 40 degrees. The employee may be exposed to hazardous chemical, smoke, dust, or potentially hazardous or volatile situations. The employee may be regularly exposed to noise in excess of 85 decibels.
