  • Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills.
  • Proficiency in digital marketing tools and platforms.
  • Experience with social media management tools and graphic design software is a plus.
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

To bring this mission to life, the Boston Athenæum seeks an innovative and strategic Marketing Manager to lead our marketing, communications, digital strategy, and social media efforts. The Marketing Manager will be critical in promoting the Athenæum's brand, expanding our audience, and enhancing our reputation as a premier cultural institution. The ideal candidate will be a creative thinker passionate about literature, history, and the arts, capable of driving engagement and growth through integrated marketing campaigns and digital initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Marketing Strategy and Execution
  • Collaborating internally and with various consultants, develop and implement comprehensive marketing and communication plans to support institutional goals, including member acquisition and retention, programming expansion, and revenue generation.
  • Care for the Athenaeum's brand and visual standards on all its external platforms.
  • Collaborate with internal departments to create targeted marketing campaigns for exhibitions, events, and special collections.
  • Analyze market trends and audience insights to optimize marketing strategies and identify new opportunities for engagement.
  • Monitor and measure engagement with communications vehicles and our website to inform decisions.

Communications
  • Craft compelling narratives communicating the Athenæum's mission, vision, and values to diverse audiences.
  • Develop and manage the production of marketing materials, including brochures, newsletters, press releases, and email campaigns.
  • Build relationships with media outlets, influencers, and partners to enhance the Athenæum's visibility and reputation.

Digital Strategy
  • Lead the development and execution of a robust digital strategy encompassing the Athenæum's website, social media channels, and digital marketing initiatives.
  • Manage the Athenaeum's website with regular content updates, including features on programs, collections and member activity.
  • Utilize analytics tools to drive website traffic and engagement and report on digital performance metrics.
  • Oversee the strategy and implementation of Pardot, ensuring its practical use for email marketing, lead generation, and customer relationship management. Develop automated marketing workflows and campaigns to enhance engagement, track user interactions, and drive membership growth and retention.

Social Media Management
  • Create and curate engaging content for social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn.
  • With support from a cross-departmental team of content creators, develop and implement social media campaigns that enhance brand awareness and foster community engagement.
  • Monitor social media trends and audience feedback to inform content strategy and improve user experience.

Collaboration and Inter-departmental Coordination
  • Work closely with various departments, including Membership, Programming, Development, and Special Collections, to ensure marketing efforts align with institutional priorities and objectives.
  • Partner with curators, librarians, and educators to source and create compelling content that highlights the Athenæum's unique offerings and expertise.
  • Serve as a liaison between the External Affairs team, its consultants and vendors, and other departments to facilitate clear communication and ensure all staff are informed about marketing strategies and initiatives.
  • Provide staff with training and support on brand guidelines, digital tools, and marketing best practices to ensure consistency and quality across all communications.

Qualifications

Education and Experience
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in marketing, communications, or digital strategy, preferably within a cultural or nonprofit organization.
  • Proven track record of developing and executing successful marketing and digital campaigns.

Skills and Competencies
  • Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills, with an eye for detail and a passion for creativity.
  • Proficiency in digital marketing tools and platforms, including Google Analytics, AdWords, Salesforce Marketing Engagement Cloud, and content management systems.
  • Experience with social media management tools and graphic design software is a plus.
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across teams.
