Qualifications

Required

  • Master's degree in special education, curriculum & instruction, reading, educational leadership or related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of special education teaching experience, school-age level strongly preferred.
  • Evidence of teacher leadership in previous positions.
  • Special Education Certification or Reading Specialist Certification required.
  • Principal or Supervisor of Special Education certification or enrollment in certification program strongly preferred.

Summary: The Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA) is a member of a building/program team assigned to support administration and staff with program implementation. The function of this position is to provide teacher leadership on a wide variety of programs, policies and procedures. The position includes consultation at the student, classroom and/or school wide levels and leading professional development, dissemination of information regarding available resources, leadership with IEP meeting planning and preparation, and facilitation. The TOSA promotes a productive and positive work environment by providing supportive, non-evaluative assistance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Provide technical assistance and training in special education topics and best practice strategies according to the needs of students, teams, buildings, and parents/guardians.
  2. Provide direct support for identified staff in a variety of topics, including evidence-based strategies of intervention programming, differentiated instruction, classroom management, data collection and analysis, etc.
  3. Provide technical assistance and training to develop effective programs including assessment, data collection, and IEP development.
  4. Access and create instructional materials and community-based experiences that create breakthrough results in the academic, functional, and behavioral health goals.
  5. Provide support to staff (general education teachers, special education teachers, related service providers, and support staff) to create collaborative teams that are working towards helping students maximize their achievement.
  6. Participate in PDE and CCIU sponsored training sessions and planning meetings.
  7. Utilize and disseminate PDE sponsored materials and information.
  8. Lead department initiatives in the areas of curriculum support and program implementation.
  9. Research and pilot viable options for literacy and math interventions in conjunction with building leadership and supervisor of special education.
  10. Provide support to teachers through observations, consultations, guided practice, and/or recommendations related to the needs of individual students or groups of students.
  11. Help schools build capacity by helping peers develop skills needed to work with students with disabilities.
  12. Collaborate with building administration to determine goals and priorities.
  13. Disseminate information regarding available resources to teachers, schools, and the community, as appropriate.
  14. Review, analyze, and communicate building, grade, and student level data.
  15. Facilitate data meetings with teachers and administrators by providing PLC sessions based on identified needs.
  16. Provide program and curriculum coaching to support onboarding and retention of staff in the form of observation and feedback and modeling of evidence-based strategies.
  17. Serve as a teacher liaison for specific programs and assist in implementation processes for new initiatives.
  18. Support the process of IEP compliance monitoring.
  19. Perform additional duties as needed.
Qualifications:
  1. Education and Experience
    1. Master's degree in special education, curriculum & instruction, reading, educational leadership or related field required.
    2. Minimum of 5 years of special education teaching experience, school-age level strongly preferred.
    3. Evidence of teacher leadership in previous positions.

Salary (2024-2025 School Year):
  • $68,823 - $109,187 - Master's degree
    $71,812 - $113,486 - Master's degree plus 15 credits
    $73,377 - $115,543 - Master's degree plus 30 credits
