The Mechanic at Lower Providence Township performs skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of Township vehicles and equipment, diagnoses mechanical problems, tunes engines, repairs and reconditions vehicles and equipment, and performs diversified preventative maintenance. Responsibilities

  • Repairs and reconditions automobiles, trucks, equipment, or anything else Township owned.
  • Repairs or replaces motors, engines, transmissions, carburetors, differentials and alternators, belts, hoses, pumps, tires, lights, ignitions, door and trunk locks, starters, generators, pumps and installs batteries.
  • Tunes engines, performs preventative maintenance, checks operational systems, changes oil and grease equipment and/or vehicles.
  • Repairs and replaces parts in electrical systems.
  • Cuts, grinds, welds, and fabricates parts as needed or required.
  • Orders and maintains inventory of replacement parts with prior approval from PW Director/management.
  • Maintains service records of maintenance and repair activities for all vehicles and equipment as directed by the Public Works Director.
  • Operates a truck or equipment with plow/spreader attachments for the removal of snow and spreading of salt on Township streets during inclement weather.
  • Operates all Township equipment which includes but not limited to backhoe, front end loader, sweeper, tractor trailer, truck, and other appropriate equipment.
  • Participates in the repair and resurfacing of Township streets.
  • Operates a truck or equipment with plow/spreader attachments for the removal of snow and spreading of salt on Township streets during inclement weather.

Qualifications

Required

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Three years’ experience in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to operate diagnostic equipment and determine the origins of malfunctions.
  • Extensive knowledge of garage methods, shop practices and techniques, tools, and machinery used in vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Working knowledge of the safe operation of the vehicles and equipment utilized in public works maintenance, repair, and construction programs.
  • Ability to perform manual labor when performing Township work.
  • Ability to perform related concrete and masonry tasks.
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather.
  • Ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Experience and knowledge of the methods, procedures, tools, and materials used in Public Works maintenance and repair.
  • Valid Class A PA Commercial Driver’s License with air brake endorsement is required. PA State Inspection License Class 7 includes passenger cars, HD trucks and trailers is required.

Works with Construction materials such as stone aggregates, hot asphalt, cold patch asphalt, and other materials as required; uses hand tools such as shovels and tampers and and/or operates equipment such as a front-end loader, grader, roller and/or other equipment as assigned by the Foreman or Crew Leader.
  • Operates a truck or equipment with plow/spreader attachments for the removal of snow and spreading of salt on Township streets during inclement weather.
  • Operates all Township equipment which includes but not limited to backhoe, front end loader, sweeper, tractor trailer, truck, and other appropriate equipment.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
  • Demonstrate by example, all tasks within the department.
  • Available for emergency calls due to inclement weather or any other circumstances.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School Diploma or the equivalent.
  • Requires three years’ experience in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment.
  • Requires ability to operate diagnostic equipment and determine the origins of malfunctions and determine effectiveness of repairs through road testing of vehicles and/or equipment.
  • Requires extensive knowledge of garage methods, shop practices and techniques, tools, and machinery used in vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Requires a working knowledge of the safe operation of the vehicles and equipment utilized in public works maintenance, repair, and construction programs.
  • Requires ability to perform manual labor when performing Township work.
  • Ability to perform related concrete and masonry tasks.
  • Requires ability to work outdoors in inclement weather.
