  • Ensures shop upkeep to ensure safety, orderliness, and cleanliness.
  • Washes and details automobiles after service is completed.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 2-3 years work-related experience as a Mechanic
  • ASE Certification
  • Valid Florida Class E driver's license
  • Ability to communicate and present oneself professionally
  • Understanding and comprehension of technical instructions and manuals
  • Ability to read, interpret, and understand schematics, blueprints, and mechanical drawings/renderings
  • Knowledge of electrical safety and workplace safety practices, including lockout/tagout
  • Thorough knowledge of mechanics, gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, pumps, valves, generators, welding, and other related areas

Position Function:

Under the direction of the Fleet Maintenance Superintendent, performs duties necessary to support the Fleet Maintenance Division in inspecting, maintaining, and repairing automobiles, utility vehicles, and/or heavy equipment. Duties encompass all aspects of maintenance and repair of any component concerning a vehicle's or equipment's body, electrical and/or computer systems, and engine or motor.


Essential Duties:

  1. Performs duties necessary to support the Fleet Maintenance Division in inspecting, maintaining, and repairing automobiles, utility vehicles, and/or heavy equipment. Duties encompass all aspects of maintenance and repair of any component concerning a vehicle's or equipment's body, electrical and/or computer systems, and engine or motor.

  2. Performs duties to implement preventative and routine maintenance. Duties include but are not limited to, tune-ups, oil changes, tire rotations, suspension work, customer service, and repair and replace components and parts. Responsible for maintaining maintenance and inventory records.

  3. Responsible for shop upkeep to ensure safety, orderliness, and cleanliness. Washes and details automobiles after service are successfully completed.

  4. Performs additional duties as assigned.

Environment:

Duties are performed primarily within a shop environment or setting. Exposure to electrical and chemical hazards; odor; vibration; noise; inclement weather; moving parts and/or components; and dust, allergens, and mold.



Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Required knowledge and experience are normally obtained through the completion of a curriculum resulting in either a High School Diploma or GED, and two (2) to three (3) years work related experience as a Mechanic, Shop Mechanic, or related field and Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification are required.

  • Must exhibit attention to detail, accuracy, and safety.

  • Must be able to communicate and present yourself professionally.

  • Must be able to understand and comprehend technical instructions and manuals.

  • Ability to read, interpret, and understand schematics, blueprints, and mechanical drawings/renderings.

  • Ability to understand and follow written or verbal instructions and/or directions.

  • Ability to read, write, and keep logbooks, inventory records, logbooks, purchase orders, and work requests.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working and professional relationships with City employees' officials, and the general public.

  • Ability to work under high demands, short time constraints, and pressure in a fast-paced work environment.

  • Ability to be on-call and call-out.

  • Thorough knowledge of electrical safety and workplace safety practices and procedures, including but not limited to, lockout/tagout.

  • Thorough knowledge of mechanics.

  • Thorough knowledge of gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, pumps, valves, generators, welding, and other related areas of knowledge.


Other Requirements:

  • Must possess a Valid Florida Class E driver's license.

  • Must pass applicable pre-employment testing and background and credit checks.


SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

This position may be required to report for work when a declaration of emergency has been declared in Polk County.
