The Ultrasound Technologist at CARLE performs routine and specialized ultrasound examinations, adapting procedures to obtain specific diagnostic and/or therapeutic results under the direction of a radiologist. The technologist also maintains quality care throughout the procedure, assesses abdominal arterial and venous systems, and performs support functions of the Medical Imaging department.
Responsibilities
- Performs ultrasound procedures
- Ensures accurate and complete examination within the guidelines, policies, & procedures
- Exhibits competency in performing ultrasound procedures
- Images required views demonstrating appropriate anatomy and pathology
- Knowledgeable of catheters, biopsy instruments and sterile trays and prepares these items as necessary
- Obtains accurate histories and explains rationale for procedure to patients/families
- Enhances image quality through the use of appropriate transducers and machine settings
- Evaluates the finished images to ensure diagnostic exams are being submitted to the radiologists
- Maintains quality care throughout the procedure
- Assess the abdominal arterial & venous system using color imaging
- Maintains working knowledge of equipment in order to function in all areas of ultrasound
- Performs reasonable trouble shooting
- Reports equipment problems through appropriate channels & documents on board for all staff notification
- Maintains clean work area, checks and stocks all supplies in their specific area
- Verifies pertinent accessories assigned to rooms
- Reports equipment problems through appropriate channels
- Invasive Procedures
- Able to document area of concern
- Set up trays with sterile field for radiologist
- Assists radiologist with biopsy
- Orders labs and pathology tests under the direction of a radiologist
- Promptly processes images and paperwork to ensure timely turn around in providing a report to the physician's office
Qualifications
Required
- Independent judgment to adapt procedures to obtain specific diagnostic results under the direction of a radiologist
- Competency in performing ultrasound procedures
- Knowledge of catheters, biopsy instruments and sterile trays
- Ability to explain rationale for procedure to patients/families
- Competency in enhancing image quality through appropriate transducers and machine settings
- Ability to assess the abdominal arterial & venous system using color imaging
- Working knowledge of ultrasound equipment
- Ability to perform reasonable trouble shooting
- Ability to maintain clean work area and stock supplies
- Ability to order labs and pathology tests under the direction of a radiologist

To perform routine and specialized examinations in Ultrasound; adapt procedures to obtain specific diagnostic and/or therapeutic results; prepare patients for examinations. This requires independent judgment to adapt procedures to obtain specific diagnostic results under the direction of a radiologist.
- Performs ultrasound procedures
- Ensures accurate and complete examination within the guidelines, policies, & procedures
- Exhibits competency in performing ultrasound procedures
- Images required views demonstrating appropriate anatomy and pathology

- Technically knowledgeable of equipment operation including hardware and software

- Promptly processes images and paperwork to ensure timely turn around in providing a report to the physician's office
- Fills out all appropriate paperwork to facilitate timely and accurate reporting
- Maintains and coordinates patient flow to ensure efficient and expedient patient care
- Promptly and accurately enters patient information into HIS system to ensure efficient patient throughput
- Maintenance of the QA, QC, QI programs
- Shares knowledge and guides fellow technologists/students with proper department protocol and procedures
- Displays a professional attitude in the area toward fellow technologists/students
- Fosters mutual respect and creates a productive learning environment
