Responsibilities

  • Creation of effective plans, performance of cost estimation, and managing the efforts of the design team.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the team, and throughout the organization.
  • Work closely with customers to help define their needs and provide competitive solutions.
  • Collaborate closely with fellow technical program leads.
  • Ensure all business is conducted using the highest ethical standards and in compliance with all applicable laws, statutes, and regulations as well as company policies and directives.

Qualifications

Required

JOB DESCRIPTION


Summary/Objective
This Senior Mechanical Engineer will be working in a team environment with frequent opportunities for customer engagement, new business development, mechanical system design, environmental test design, component design, drafting, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, test fixture design, assembly, and test engineering.

Essential Functions

  1. Mechanical engineering design of precision aerospace electro-mechanical, and/or opto-mechanical flight hardware systems, components, and/or ground support and test equipment from concept through detail design, fabrication, and assembly.
  2. Effort will include CAD modeling (primarily in Solidworks), drafting and dimensioning and tolerancing (Solidworks), design analysis, interfacing with various vendors for fabrication of components, and assembly. There is potential for supervision of other engineers, designers, and drafters.
  3. Creation of effective plans, performance of cost estimation, and managing the efforts of the design team.
  4. Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the team, and throughout the organization. Interact appropriately with others to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
  5. Work closely with customers to help define their needs and provide competitive solutions.
  6. Collaborate closely with fellow technical program leads.
  7. Ensure all business is conducted using the highest ethical standards and in compliance with all applicable laws, statutes, and regulations as well as company policies and directives.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  1. Demonstrated creativity in mechanical engineering design, including the ability to conceive and develop configurable products across a diverse set of customer needs.
  2. Experience with CAD design using SolidWorks.
  3. Experience with design for manufacturability and assembly (DFMA).
  4. Experience creating mechanical drawings and working with manufacturers to refine designs and drawings.
  5. Experience interpreting and developing finite element models related to thermal, modes of structures, and static loading in an aerospace context.
  6. Experience with tolerance stack analysis including interpretation and implementation of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
  7. Ability to thoroughly and clearly document products and processes.
  8. Experience with supply chain management, including, but not limited to: maintaining effective working relationships with vendors, writing purchase orders, and completing and submitting expense reports in a timely manner.
  9. Knowledge of clean rooms and clean room practices, competency with mill and lathe, handling and assembly of flight hardware.
  10. Must be able to work in a highly collaborative, fast paced, startup environment.
  11. Organized and motivated team player, with the ability to manage multiple projects while paying close attention to detail.
  12. Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively explain protocol and processes to an audience with varied technological knowledge and experience.
  13. Strong analytical, decision-making and problem-solving skills.


Supervisory Responsibility
This position supervises and mentors employees and serves as the subject matter expert (SME) of their field.


Work Environment
Work is performed in an office, laboratory, production floor, or cleanroom, outdoors or remote research environment. May occasionally work in production work centers where use of protective equipment and gear is required. May access other facilities in various weather conditions.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are typically Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. This position may require long hours and weekend work.


Travel
Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area, overnight or international travel may be expected.


Required Education and Experience

  1. Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field and 10 years' related experience or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  1. Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
