The Pharmacy Technician at Hollywood Presbyterian, part of the CHA Health System, assists in the procurement, storage, preparation, and distribution of medications under the direct supervision of a registered Pharmacist. This role involves patient billing, inventory control, and other non-discretionary tasks related to the maintenance of the Pharmacy. The position is based in a new facility scheduled to open next year and is seeking current RN candidates to staff various units.

Responsibilities

  • Selecting the correct drug product from the inventory to fill patient orders and stock orders.
  • Preparation and compounding of sterile parental pharmaceuticals and chemo therapeutic agents under the supervision of a pharmacist; preparation of the appropriate labeling of these products
  • Prepack preparation as needed under the supervision of a pharmacist.
  • Fill floor stock requests in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Familiar with all aspects of the computer system, including but not limited to: order entry, report generation for cart fills and IV admixture preparation, billing entry.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of age specific care, including but not limited to, identifying the need for additional safety measures, physiological normal values/readings; and assessing skin integrity, behavior, motor skills and/or activities that place patients at risk as well as communicates effectively in a clear, concise, understandable manner.
  • Answer telephones and take messages. Take initial calls for requests from the patient care areas. Triage calls and decide which could be handled without interrupting the Pharmacist.
  • Calls for refill authorization for ambulatory patients.
  • Performs the initial insurance intake from ambulatory patients. Verifies insurance eligibility.
  • Performs cash register functions and reconciliation.
  • Performs billing operations and follow-up for ambulatory, long term patients and medical staff. Ensures timeliness of submission with respect to in-house processing and external payer source policies.
  • Replaces working stocks of drugs, solutions and supplies in the Pharmacy and designated storage areas throughout the Medical Center; informs the Pharmacy Buyer per established procedure; assists in the maintenance of inventory.
  • Complies with Kronos timekeeping system and company policy regarding time management

Qualifications

Required

  • High school graduate
  • Completion of course work leading to certification as a Pharmacy Technician
  • California Pharmacy Technician Certificate
  • Current Los Angeles County Fire Card required (within 30 days of employment)
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Must be able to work in a union environment

Preferred

  • Minimum of one year's experience in pharmacy preparations for large volume parenterals and intravenous antibiotics, chemo-therapeutic agents, or certification from an accredited school offering a Pharmacy Technician training program

Position Summary:

Position Accountabilities:

  • Knowledge of the special age related needs of patients in the Medical Center, including, but not limited to:
  • Preparation of liquid unit dose syringes and special dosage forms for neonate patients
  • Special dose form considerations of geriatric patients and comatose patients
  • Demonstrates knowledge of age specific care, including but not limited to, identifying the need for additional safety measures, physiological normal values/readings; and assessing skin integrity, behavior, motor skills and/or activities that place patients at risk as well as communicates effectively in a clear, concise, understandable manner.
