We recently talked to a job seeker, Krysta, so she could share her story about job searching - the challenges, the wins, what was helpful, what wasn't, etc.
Krysta had been job searching since June/July 2023 and found EarnBetter in May 2024. Within a few weeks of signing up for EarnBetter, Krysta had 2 job interviews lined up. Krysta ended up getting offers from both jobs and started her new job at the end of July 2024. You can learn more about her story by reading the transcript of this call below. You can also listen to the recording here.
00:03
Krysta: Hello, this is Krysta.
00:05
Jon: Hi, Krysta. This is Jon with Earn Better. How are you doing?
00:10
Krysta: Hi, I'm good. How are you?
00:12
Jon: I'm doing great. Thank you so much for, uh, kind of sharing, uh, today in the chat and taking the time today.
00:16
Krysta: Sure, sure, absolutely.
Jon: Would love to just start with hearing a little bit about your job search and kind of how it went, what you were looking for, and what kind of kicked it off.
00:31
Krysta: So, well, the job search, this latest job search, I actually had put the search on hold for a couple of months. It was just getting discouraging, so kind of to go all the way back. I would say June or July of 2023, I started searching.
00:49
Krysta: I had one year in the job that I was in. And so, you know, most corporations you might have to spend like one year time in. So, from there, I applied externally and internally, and one interview in like ten months, you know, of searching.
00:59
Jon: Yes, yeah.
Krysta: And I didn't get that position, but I think I applied maybe 40 positions that kind of lost track. And, you know, so it was just kind of discouraging, so I put it on hold for a little bit and tried to look at, you know, different skills, upskillings, you know, little stuff, what's going on? Kind of a thing.
01:33
Krysta: And my ex had actually also gotten laid off in July of last year. So he shared the website with me. We were both, you know, we talk about, you know, job searches that we're trying to do and stuff. So I only noticed it when I went in today but I know I signed up in middle of May.
01:56
Krysta: I think it was, yeah, it was about the middle of May and just within two and a half weeks I had two job interviews lined up.
02:07
Krysta: Went through, you know, with two companies that I really wanted to be, you know, to be employed with and went through two rounds of interviews with both of them and got both jobs.
02:18
Jon: Incredible.
Krysta: I know, it's just amazed and just like on top of the, you know, over the moon, you know, and so I accepted one of the positions and I start on July 23rd.
02:30
Jon: Congratulations. I know job searches can be really hard and to get to the end and have multiple options kind hit both at once must have felt so good.
02:41
Krysta: Yeah, yeah, yeah. It was pretty incredible to be able to be, you know, at the big, you know, as they say about opportunity and being prepared and that's why I actually was. I already had a resume that I'd spent a lot of money on that just wasn't, you know, working for me.
03:04
Krysta: I tell them all the time I'm like, was it really my resume all this time, you know, that that wasn't being caught, wasn't being, you know, looked at something. So it was just incredible to use your website.
03:16
Jon: When you say you spent a lot of money on your resume, what do you, can you say more about that?
03:20
Krysta: Oh, not with you all.
Jon: Oh, yes, but with?
03:23
Krysta: So I had been kind of, I was looking kind of like at an executive type level kind of before, you know, going into, I switched careers years. And so I really didn't know exactly what I wanted to do and part of it's probably my fault. My resume was just too much.
03:43
Krysta: It was just trying to be too much and so I searched for someone to help because this is not my area of expertise. And so I searched and found an actual company that would help me write my resume and it was just way too much.
04:01
Krysta: The whole process, and I didn't get, but one interview out of the whole thing, so.
Jon: How much did this company charge you?
04:09
Krysta: They charge, I want to say, was 900 because they also helped me with my LinkedIn profile and all of that, and even after I was done with the process, I was disappointed that I didn't get more LinkedIn assistance.
04:26
Krysta: And, you know, because these two areas that are just not where my expertise is, you know, so there's a need to be where your expertise is, right?
04:37
Jon: So it should, and that makes sense. What was the name of the company?
04:43
Krysta: I think it's the letter I career solutions, I believe that's who it was.
04:50
Jon: Okay. Well, I'm glad you found Earn Better. So when you found Earn Better, what did you, what was your first impressions of Earn Better and then how did it ultimately support you in your job search?
05:03
Krysta: So my first impressions were how easy to use and understand what I was doing wrong by seeing how it was going right. Like as far as just cleaning up a lot of the descriptions of what I do, my skill sets, the formatting of the resume.
05:26
Krysta: Through the process of applying for, you know, 30, 40 positions, I mean, my resume, you have to tailor it, of course, to each one, but losing track of what's, you know, it's just not something that I was doing a very good job at.
05:42
Krysta: And looking at being able to bring in resumes and the job description to the site. I mean, just the ease of use on the website was amazing.
05:53
Krysta: And I actually think the process of filtering and the recommended job recommendations that were coming to me were so much more on point than the job searches I was using on other sites. Like they were really, they just seemed to match much better.
06:06
Jon: Yeah, that's awesome to hear. It's really wonderful feedback. And then for the jobs that you found and ultimately got offers from, did you find both of those roles on Earn Better?
06:23
Krysta: Yes, yes, actually both of them. And I think one of them I was able to apply through the site. One of them I was not, but I sent feedback about a month ago. I think when I clicked on the USAA opening, it pre-filled with some information that wasn't accurate that I couldn't change.
07:03
Krysta: And so I was concerned that it was going to actually kick me out. So I ended up applying on USAA's website directly for that role.
07:18
Jon: Awesome. I do remember now that you said this. Very cool. Have you shared Earn Better with anybody else?
07:28
Krysta: I have, yes. I shared it with a couple of cousins. One cousin just got her master's and she's also searching, so I sent that to her three or four weeks ago.
07:49
Krysta: And I know that my ex might have also shared it with other people who are searching.
Jon: Incredible.
08:07
Jon: As you think back on your job search and your experience with Earn Better, was there anything more that we could have done to support you? Any features you wish were there that you didn’t have access to?
08:16
Krysta: Not really, I hadn’t thought about that. I think it’s a great tool. I’m coming back anytime I’m looking for another position, because again, the searches were really focused for me, which I liked.
08:27
Krysta: I can’t think of anything. I even mentioned to my ex when he showed me the site, I was amazed. I said, I don’t know if you've done any focus groups, but I would actually pay a subscription fee or something because it’s such a wonderful site.
08:55
Krysta: I didn’t flesh out in my head what that would look like or how much, but just having better support, like you said earlier, it was better than all the other searches I had done.
09:14
Jon: Wow, that’s really humbling to hear. Thank you for sharing that. We’ll keep building and making sure it remains the best job search experience.
09:25
Krysta: Absolutely, it’s well-deserved.
09:38
Jon: Any last thoughts or things you’d like to share before we wrap up?
09:49
Krysta: Not much more. Just huge gratitude for what the team has built, and you guys have impacted my life for the better. It was life-changing.
10:07
Jon: Thank you, Krysta. That means the world to us. Congratulations again on your new role, and wishing you all the success!
10:25
Krysta: Thank you so much. And if you ever need anything more or want to reach out, I’m always happy to share my experience!
10:40
Jon: We’ll definitely keep that in mind. Take care and keep in touch!
10:51
Krysta: Thanks, you too. Bye-bye.
12:01
Jon: Bye-bye.
